The day I chose to learn how to start a blog was an exciting and smart decision. Why? Because it is a great way to make money online and let my creativity flow, whilst also helping mums thrive too!

I first started a blog as a personal trainer when I shared my workouts and nutrition. It was a fun little blog that attracted readers worldwide, and I loved interacting with followers from other countries This sense of community and creativity was the first step into starting a blog. At the time I didn’t understand how to make money with a blog, all I knew was I loved creating content and connecting with others.

Fast forward a couple of years and I became an online freelance writer for health and fitness websites. My passion for creating content online grew and I was getting paid for it. Win-win! I stopped the blog and work when I became a mum for the first time as I wanted to focus on being a stay at home mum. However, circumstances changed a couple of years later and I wanted to make money and have a creative outlet whilst being a stay at home mum.

I came across Suzi from startamomblog.com and knew instantly I needed to dive into her resources and courses to help me get stuck back into creating content and making money online so that I could do what I love and continue to be a stay at home mum.

What Blog Should I Start?

To learn how to start a blog, the first place is knowing what you are going to blog about. There are so many topics you can blog on, the world truly is your oyster, so don’t think you can’t start as you are a beginner and have never done blogging before.

You can blog about fashion, travel, parenting, pregnancy, art, photography, business, money, real estate, cars, breastfeeding, veganism, technology…the list is endless. Ask yourself these questions:

What do you love to talk about, to do, think about?
Do you want to make money with your blog?
Who do you want to help with your blog?

Once you know the answers to these questions, you can dig deeper into the topic of your blog. If you are wanting to make money online with a blog, then you want to pick a topic you love and one that can help others.

Yes you can make money at the beginning of starting a blog! However, let’s clear up a few concerns about making money whilst starting a blog.

It depends on your starting point as to whether you will make money at the beginning of starting a blog. For example, if you are a personal trainer with an online fitness business you might find it easy to get current clients paying for your online services through the blog or clicking links to affiliate products.

If you are a complete beginner, with no current business, online business and zero blogging history, then you still might make money very early on in your blogging career, or it might take time to build the audience to make money.

There are no guarantees you will make money when starting a blog, or ever, however, treat your blog as a business and follow resources to help you get on a good path to create a successful blog that turns into a successful business where you make money online whilst being a stay at home mum.

Here are a few ways you can make money when starting a blog:

Online services (1:1 and group coaching)
Affiliate marketing
Sponsored posts
Sell own products

These are just a few examples of ways you can make money whilst building a successful blog. If you need an injection of money, then look into these options and start it straight away whilst building your blog.

There is so much money to be made with a blog! You will be surprised at what you can achieve with a blog when you are consistent and treat the blog as a business.

Of course, this amount of money didn’t happen overnight, it took time just like any other business would to make money and have a profitable business. The key is consistency and quality, and these two elements will happen when you have a smart schedule and a blog plan.

How Do You Start a Free Blog and Make Money?

It’s a bit tricky to start a free blog, or rather a quality blog for free. You can start a free blog using WordPress.org which has amazing tools for creating a free blog. However, you will need to build most of the site yourself and host most of the software yourself.

If you want a personal blog you can use WordPress.com which is easy to set up and free, however, you won’t have your own custom domain name. If your plan is to make money from your website this isn’t the best option as it doesn’t look as professional without a custom domain and you are limited on what you can do on WordPress.com for a money-making blog.

How Much Does it Cost to Start a Blog?

A better long term strategy is to pay a small amount for a host and then open an account with WordPress.org. I recommend using One.com for the host and domain. I have used them for years and the online support has always been fantastic in solving my tech issues!

Starting a blog is one of the most inexpensive businesses and side hustles to start. It is such a low-cost investment with rewarding results! The basics you need are a good internet connection and a website. You can pay for expensive themes, advanced tools, or pay for someone to design and build your website, but none of this is necessary to start a quality blog.

How Do Beginners Make Money?

I answered this question above under the section ‘How Can I Make Money Starting a Blog?’. The key is to not worry about the fact you are a beginner at blogging. Just get started using the tools I have recommended in this blog post. Be consistent, follow a blog plan and a schedule. Treat it as a business and soon enough you will start to make money.

How Do Bloggers Get Paid?

Aside from the ways to make money with a blog I listed further above in the blog post, there are a few ways to get paid.

Affiliate Marketing – If you do affiliate marketing you will get paid from that company. Once you have set up your account and added your bank details you will be paid on a weekly or monthly basis stated by the company’s terms.
Online Services and Products- If you are providing online services or products it will depend on which payment system you set up on your blog to use to get paid. Popular choices are with PayPal and Stripe. Once the payment system is set up you will be paid once the transaction is completed.
Freelance Writing – If you offer freelance writing for other businesses or blogs, it will depend on their business terms for how you get paid. It might be weekly, monthly or after each project. You might get paid via bank transfer or PayPal.
